Weeding, Thai Food & Cows

I am currently sitting inside my shack underneath a grey sky that has decided to drizzle some warm rain upon my world. I would like to take some time and go into a little more depth as to what I have been doing around here for work as well as a few other miscellaneous details that I find intriguing. So far I have created an area to plant a few herbs,

My life in a Shack

My ears are the first senses to interpret the world around me. I hear birds chirping immediately outside my mesh door. I can hear the wind blowing softly. Eyes open next, they are stunned to take in the extraordinary palm trees, and herbs that are covered with the warm morning light. I look at the clock and it says 6:00. If I were at home I would immediately fall back asleep, but here I feel different. Renewed, refreshed, invigorated and most of all excited for the adventures that the day will undoubtedly bring. I have decided that for this post I would like to show you my immediate surroundings of where I live. First off is my extraordinary shack.

This is where I sleep, relax and learn to cook. I was amazed as to how much satisfaction I could draw from such a small place. To be honest, I don’t think I have ever been inside a more glorious piece of architecture. It reminds me every day that living comfortably and happy does not require much. Now, you may be thinking “Come on, its an old shack, you only like it because of the location.” Well, you would be partly right. The location is a huge factor in my enjoyment of the place, and it serves me just as I need it to in this location. For that, I really appreciate it for what it is. I find myself appreciating what is beyond my walls more because outside is practically my inside. Look at the picture. The whole front side is a screen! Here is a picture of what I see when I wake up in the morning. Glorious, no.Like I said, this shack is also where I learn to cook. Here is where the chef goes to play…This is a fabulous concoction that I invented last night. It consists of chicken cooked with black pepper and garlic, mixed into brown rice with various garden greens and copious amounts of peanut sauce. However, the secret ingredient is mozzarella cheese. It makes things more interesting. Please note my sensuous Japanese chopsticks…

I will be posting some more pictures of the general Hana area and the greenery that engulfs me very soon.

A quick update as to my activities so far: Today I worked 6 hours so that I will be able to take a day off. After work, I went to Red Sand Beach with my host Bert. It is an extremely alluring beach. I went snorkeling around some very interesting rock formations with enchanting fish swimming directly beneath me, that is until I dove down and joined them. Bert is going to try and find me a spear gun so that I can catch some dinner. I will let you know if this happens!

Thats all for today. However, I have some good adventures lined up for me in the near future that I hope to write about. On that note, I had originally planned to write every day but living the good life seems to get in the way. I will try to put some time aside so that I can really write about all the great things that I am experiencing here.

Until then,
Aloha and Mahalo for reading!

P.S. If there is anything that you are curious about please post it in the comments.

Hana is stunning! I like very much…

Wow!

Hana, Maui is absolutely stunning. It has to be one of the most verdant and alive places I have ever laid my eyes upon. I will take a brief moment to describe what I have done so far as I am trying to go to bed before 10…

I arrived on kahului, Maui, gathered my baggage and met my host (Bert). He is a very kind, and knowledgeable man. I have already learnt much through him about the island that he calls home. That night we stayed over night at a house that belongs to Berts friend in Kahului. The reasoning was that the drive to Hana would be much better to be seen in all its glory duringthe day. And let me tell you, it is a drive to remember. Think Jurassic Park, but on natural organic free range steroids!

Today, I arrived at my new home, dropped the suitcase in my “shack” (I will post pictures soon) and immediately proceeded to go swimming at Homoa beach where I surprisingly spent most of my time trying to bury myself in the sand! I walked back to my spectacular shack, had a quick nap and set off to work with the other wwoofer that is here. He is a very intriguing guy from Kentucky. He is the type of person who I wouldn’t mind emulating. He has traveled all over Europe wwoofing, and he even went to school in Italy. Before Maui, he was in New Zealand wwoofing there too! Very awesome in my books. Anyways, today we picked weeds, prepared an area to plant sugar cane, cut down a banana tree, ate many bananas, dehydrated bananas and made egg fried rice! All in all today was as if it was from a dream. To be honest, I feel amazingly content.

May you also have a sun radiating over you, however you want to interpret that.
Aloha,
Zach

WWOOF to you!

Hello, soon to metamorphose to Aloha!

I will soon be transported to some very fine land where I will tillage on someone’s property in the geographical region of Hana, Maui. That means there will be many extraordinary adventures told through this idea & experience sharing device called a blog. I found the “farm” (its only a half acre property with many fruit trees, and a ditch that needs to be created by moi…) through an organization called WWOOF. That howling acronym stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms. It functions like this: humans (hum for short) interested in farming, travel and adventure choose a country where they would like to farm. Then the hum pays something like 20-30 in electronic currency (ec) for a list of farming establishments in that country. Once WWOOF verifies the ec, they will send a list of organic farms in that country for the hum to contact. At that point the hum is no longer a hum they are a WWOOFer! It is the WWOOFer’s responsibility to contact the farms they are interested in and make arrangements. Most farms and pseudo farms, like mine, provide room and board. The place I am staying at does provide a small guest house for me, but no boards… Does anyone know how the word board came to mean a provision of regular meals? If you do please let me know!

WWOOF, now that I removed that from my ‘to blog’ list I can describe the place I will be going to as it was described to me. Apparently the property falls off into the ocean as the front yard is composed of some large cliffs! As mentioned earlier, it has many fruit trees and even some vegetables. I was told that there is such abundance on this property that I will not need to purchase any fruits or vegetables for my board! Lucky for me, the property is close in proximity to Venus Pool, Hamoa Beach, Oheo Gulch and Seven Pools! I must tell you that writing this makes me feel like paparazzi at the sight of Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie with children in arms on top of everest building a school for Cambodian orphans! Now, you must be thinking “Zach, to be staying at such an ideal place you will have to work 12 hours/day lugging boulders across Maui!” Actually, all that is required of me is a puny 3 hours/day. Fantástico, no? The rest of that time is mine to explore the great Maui wilderness, read, learn how to cook and write about said things.

Until later, Aloha!

P.S. Be sure to check back frequently (and subscribe!) as I have some great escapades lined up from now until September. Stay tuned for more stories on Maui ‘from the field’.
