Yesterday I went for a hike up the nearby volcano. When I say up the volcano, I mean the whole island is a volcano and I walked on it… And, when I say hike, I mean I walked up a long (paved) road that snakes its way between houses, jungle and wild fruit trees! To be honest, the road had a sign that said 4X4 road at the start (your getting an idea of the extreme nature of this road… right!) As you know, I am crazy hard core. Here is a picture to give an idea of my grand trek.Anyways, I passed by massive mango trees, papaya trees and I even stumbled upon a shrubbery glorified with guavas. Then, as I made my way back down the magnificent mountain, I spotted little pods of heavenly scent and color barely a few feet up someones driveway. You might not think of a guava as being especially fragrant, but when the air is so neutral and the guava is in close proximity to the olfactory organ the scent can be easily detected. It was so surprising to see a strikingly smelly, sumptuous and scrumptious guava in front of my smile that I was forced to be sincerely sinister and trespass on the sinuous driveway. What a treat I had! The rest of the walk down the mountain consisted of heaven raining down on me and my earthly senses. Here is a picture of the view I voraciously ingested during my hike.
When I took the guavas home I placed the remaining ones, along with the papaya, in a basket which hangs above the kitchen in the shack. As I made breakfast this morning I was reminded of the guavas (as I crafted my bagel with peanut butter and cheese). Check out my cooking arrangement. As you can see it was optimized for maximum smelling enjoyment while cutting the cheese. No pun intended…
Today I tried my thumb at hitchhiking. It worked really well going into town (the first car I saw stopped for me), but coming back required about 2.5 miles of walking before a tourist was kind enough to give me a roll. As I walked I realized how fun cows on the side of the road can be. I came across a bridge with a whole number of cows standing under it. As I walked over the bridge, I started mooing. Instead of looking up the cows started looking all around themselves trying to find the lone mooer. It was kind of like playing Marco Polo…with cows. Here is a picture of one cow searching for me. What a clever human I am!
Lastly, here is a song that I cant seem to get out of my head. Some days this is the farthest my social commentary goes…

Zach,
you ARE crazy hard core! You are a great traveler not letting precious opportunities slip by unnoticed. What a feeling it must be to have heaven and earth meet over your head and under your feet. Such intimacy with nature makes me imagine why the word “home” has such warm vibration.
I must say, you cut the cheese quite famously!
Continue to enjoy your multi-special friends and sphere of exploration,
Isaac
PS: If I do not hear from you before…have a spectacular rest of your trip and flight back!
